Skills and Experiences
Over the course of the summer I have worked on several areas within the research and gained a whole array of valuable skills and experiences. These include:
- Hands on research skills
- Using strip board to create prototype circuits
- Using an oscilloscope and frequency generator to test my circuit
- How to collimate a laser
- How to achieve feedback in the laser diode using a diffraction grating
- Using a wavemeter to measure the wavelength of a laser
- "Walking" a laser beam using two mirrors to maximise laser power
- Tuning a laser diode to the correct wavelength by altering the 3 variables (grating angle, temperature and current)
- Creating a light tight workplace to ensure laser safety
- Correct procedures to avoid contamination while working on a vacuum system
- Presenting Research
- Making this website to explain my work
- Keeping a personal lab book on my work
- Keeping the group lab books up to date while working on group projects
- Feeding back to the group in weekly meetings
- IT skills
- Learned how to convert graphs to a logarithmic scale using excel
- Used Excel to calculate frequency and component values
- Used Excel to produce tables of testing data
- Learned how to use Filter Wiz Pro 4.0 to simulate active filters
- Learned how to use AADE Filter Design V4.4 to simulate passive filters
- Used Novarm Dip Trace to create PCB layouts
- Used the internet as a research aid
- Used the internet to compare and buy components
- Other
- Took items to a local anodising company to be anodised
- Socialised with the rest of my group
