NMR Laboratory Rules

The NMR laboratory in the School of Life Sciences is a laboratory like any other. All University of Sussex safety policies and procedures apply to work in the laboratory. Below are local rules which relate specifically to the lab. Questions and queries to Dr Iain J. Day.

  1. The NMR Laboratory is like all laboratories - the usual rules and procedures apply.

  2. Persons with pacemakers, medical implants and prostheses etc. must consult the NMR facility manager before entering the laboratory.

  3. Access to the instruments is to trained users ONLY.
    • You cannot train other members of your groups.
    • If you have new people joining your group, e.g. Summer Students, please ask them to arrange a time with me for training. This does not mean immediately before they need to use the spectrometers!
    • I keep records of all trained users.

  4. Gloves must not be worn when using the spectrometer computers.

  5. Please remember to remove your sample from the SMS tray on the 500 when finished.
    • You may notice I periodically put them in an empty cup on the desk.
    • Unclaimed samples will be disposed of. I will assume your sample is not required and you will forfeit your tube.

  6. Please collect your print outs.
    • There are rather large piles building up from time to time.
    • If print outs are not collected they will be recycled.

  7. Please honour the booking rules for the vnmr400:
    1. No more than one consecutive 20 min slot between 9am and 4pm.
    2. No more than two consecutive slots between 7am and 9am, and between 4pm and 8pm.
    3. The over night slot does not start until 8pm. Please do not start overnight experiments earlier than this.

  8. If you require any special arrangements these are by negotiation with me, and will be based on scientific need.

Remember, these rules are there for the smooth running of the NMR lab, and failure to follow them may hinder your access to the NMR facility.
