(but take it with the proverbial grain of salt ...) The New David Sylvian Album - 13th May 1998 The new David Sylvian album is out at last, albeit on limited release. Its not really supposed to be heard by people yet, but a privileged few in the music business have had a sneak preview. I've only had a day to listen to the tape and I don't think all the songs on it will actually be on the album, but I can tell you 'Final Conversations on the Shakra Plain' sounds like a real cracker. Its definitely worth the wait. Apparently there will be some mixes of some of the tracks. Its mostly mellow and very beautiful. The mood is alittle like the Alpha album released on Melankolic. Hope you'll all like it. I'm sorry that you'll not be able to hear it atleast until after the world cup but I guarantee, just wait alittle longer and you'll love your ears forever. Having initally failed to drum up interest in the work among a small network of associates the material was shelved indefinitely. Mid '97 I came across the material again and, moved by it, decided to collect it together on a CD for private purposes. I sent out 15 copies to friends and family which included two people at Virgin. To answer your question; no, Virgin didn't respond by handing us a deal but then we weren't aggressively shopping for one although we'd have been more than happy to have received an offer. Playing with her I recognized = Richard Barbieri on keyboards (surely), Mick Karn on bass (almost surely = - he was in the eyebrows-less term !!!), and maybe (not so surely) = Adrian Belew on guitar (almost same look as on Sakamoto's Left Handed = Dream photo). I didn't recognized the boy playing drums because he wore = big dark RayBan glasses and a white scarf wrapped around his head (odd = enough and funny!!!), but, in this case, I assumed him to be Steve = Jansen. Being not so much in Toyah works (I was too young by the time: I = only remember she had a pretty big success here in Italy, and she was = present in almost each TV music show) I can't date the gig nor tell what = she was singing (I think to remember that she repeated often "I'm free" = or "I want to be free" or something that way). Strange enough that the talkshowman (Red Ronnie) who I know to be a big = Japan fan, didn't say anything about the members of the group. But that = night they were only talking about fashion (the following clip was an = apperance of Steve Strange's Visage at the same festival....). And I didn't either know that she already had a link to King Crimson by = that time (Belew, if it was him). Is there someone who can spread some light? No DS content for drum'n'bass-philes: I'm now almost sure that, excepting the bass player - Desmond Foster, = the members of the band touring with David Byrne are the Morcheeba (Ross = and Paul Godfrey on almost all instruments and samples, and Skye Edwards = on vocals: I didn't know she was so beatiful as on DB stage...excepting = for the disquieting white eye-lenses). Regards / Fabrizio ===== From: "steve mcatee" Date: Wed, 06 Aug 1997 20:22:18 PDT Subject: PotSW: Only Time Will Tell, Only Time is True... Hello my good friends: I'd like to think that somebody, someday, could stand up and say... I might be going out on a limb a little bit here, but it's inspired by my deep love for great music in general and Kansas in particular! I read that for over 10 years, a fanatical Bruce Springsteen fan went to Springsteen concerts, holding up a large sign reading "Murder Incorporated," the title of a widely circulated Springsteen bootleg song. Finally, Springsteen released the 1982 recording on his 1994 "Greatest Hits" album. So I'm hoping to follow the precedent! As some of you know and others don't, Steve Walsh recorded 3 songs in 1989 with Vince DiCola, best known for composing and playing the intensely inspiring music for the training and boxing sequences of "Rocky IV." That includes probably one of my 5 favorite musical moments of all time - the extraordinarially uplifting coda of "Heart's on Fire," featured both during the last training scene (while the title character is running up a mountain) and during the closing credits. One of the songs that Steve and Vince (plus Jethro Tull drummer Doane Perry) recorded together was "Only Time Will Tell." And it's shocking to me that Kansas has never released this song, which has been fairly widely circulated. The song is sort of a balladic version of Vince's "Rocky IV" material. It it truly one of the best combinations of progressive rock and a pop ballad that I've ever heard. And the lyrics are some of Steve's best (I wish I had legal clearance to print them)! The keyboard cadenzas, tempo changes, elaborate arrangement and extended instrumental sections make it decidedly progressive. But the melody is also simply gorgeous and the hook is commercial enough to sell to pop radio. And the ending just leaves you on an emotional high, which is one of the greatest compliments that a song can be given. And as if that's not enough, Steve's voice is simply phenomenal. A real emotionally charged performance, much like on Can't Cry Anymore. If it was a Kansas song, I would almost certainly rank it among their 10 best! And an accompanying video directed by Martin Scorsese would be a great supplement! In the upcoming issue of AC, I plug the song to Robby, who says he needs to ask Steve about it - he's never heard it! If any of you know the song and think it belongs on a Kansas album, make your voice known! It's way too good a song to waste! An avalanche of e-mail can't be ignored! A few giant banners at concerts wouldn't hurt either. If the band knows that their die-hards love it, the impact can only be positive! Also, the Walsh/Dicola/Perry tape features a stunning remake of the Streets song "Broken Glass." Though the song originally appeared 12 years ago, few have heard it, so it would be a great song to put on a Kansas album as well, and could very well become a top 40 single if given good promotion! The 3rd WDP song, "Suffer the Children," has echoes of "Bells of St. James." It's my least favorite of the 3 songs on the tape, but still pretty good! After all, a great song is a terrible thing to waste! Take care + God bless, Steve McAtee Audio Confessions Kansas fan magazine audioconfessions@hotmail.com ===== From: stryx@mars.superlink.net (Hammell) Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 23:50:05 -0500 Subject: PotSW: "Wasn't it Love" Has anyone heard the song "Wasn't it Love" by Mastedon? It's definitely one of their best songs. It's not on either album. It can be found on California Metal, and One of those Christian Metal collections from Arrival/Ktel. I know how some of the Kansas mailing list despises "Perfect Lover" but, I like that one. "Wasn't it Love" was originally called What About Love, In fact on the CD of Cal Metal has it listed as Wasn't it love and What About Love, but I think they changed the lyrics. I think it was probably meant for a secular solo album or band project earlier. The song "Get Up" is probably the most similar to it, and that one is found on Cal Metal II and their 1st album. I would say Perfect Lover and Fight Fire With Fire are in the same vein as these. ===== To Cut a Long Story Short - A Tribute to the Pioneers of Electronic Pop ERCD083 - Energy Rekords (1995) 1. Does anyone know what happened to John Clarke? I heard he played in the band of Cliff Richard... but I can't imagine he never played interesting jazzrock again. I think you aren't familiar with the "Rene Engel Band". Rene Engel is a dutch drummer/composer who released his first album 2 years ago. Anyone who is into a mixture of jazzrock and UK-like progressive rock MUST simply love this album. AH was supposed to play on it, but in a dutch drumming magazine (Slagwerkkrant) an editor wrote his record-company wouldn't let him (he had to finish off None Too Soon). One song on the album (Exodrome) is dedicated to AH. The guitarist who plays on it is Frank Burks, who obviously is very much influenced by AH. At the moment they have a new guitar player though: Richard Hallebeek (check out "Richie and Antti- Generator, available through a.o Audiophile Imports). Richard is a very talented dutch guitarist who is working on his second album now, and AH is going to play on it, plus Vinnie Colaiuta! I heard a few compositions and it sounds promising!
