You are walking through Hangleton Park, keeping your eyes peeled for unusual signs. Suddenly, you see a figure walking towards you from Park Rise - although you were sure there was no-one there before!
It's a tall, stocky-looking man in a dirty smock and a leather apron, with thick dark hair and bushy sideburns. He points a gnarled, grubby finger at you and says, "You there! Wait! I must talk to you".
"The name's Abel Cooms", he introduces himself. "And I'm a blacksmith. You look like a sharp-witted person: I need help from the likes of you".

"I bet you're wondering what's happening here, yes? Well, I'll tell you. I come from the year 1841. I had my forge and my home down on Foredown Road, and the area looked nothing like it does now, I can tell you. None of these houses and flats were here, it was all just fields. But let me guess: you've been through a difficult time around here, yes? Stuck at home, waiting for the world to open up again, hearing the same news every day?? Felt sometimes like time itself had ground to a halt?
Well, here's the thing:
It did.
Without enough energy driving it forward, time has come to a complete stop. And all the history that came before you has come bumping into itself, thrown forward as the Wheel of Time stopped, crushed up together into NOW. And someone's going to have to start Time up again - get the Wheel turning and straighten out this mess. And that, my friend, is YOU.
(text-colour:#fab005)[But to do this, there are two things you need to find:
** First, the Axle of History, around which Time turns.
** And second, the Time Crank, the ancient tool to get it turning!
The Axle of History will be the oldest building around here. What do you think is the oldest building in Hangleton?"]

No! It's old, but it's not THAT old. The earliest parts of the building are from the 15th century, and most of it was rebuilt in the 16th.
Where else might be the oldest building?

(if: $level is 0)[That's right! St Helen's Church has been standing longer than any other building in Hangleton - and possibly in Brighton & Hove. The earliest reference to it is from 1093, when Hangleton was ruled by William de Warenne, one of the earliest Norman lords in Britain. It's stood here ever since, watching the world change around it.
When you get to the church, Abel Cooms starts investigating, running his hands over the stonework and patting the timbers. "Yes," he says, "This is the Axle of History alright. Can't you feel the time in these walls?
But - hang on! I thought as much! The Time Crank's been taken! All that's left is this note".
(text-colour:#868e96)[//To anyone looking for the Time Crank,//
//I, William de Warenne, Lord of this Manor, have taken it! And it's hidden away, where no meddlesome explorers can find it.//
//I know this must be frustrating, but when I saw what history had in store for my lands, what choice did I have? In MY time ("medieval", I think you call it) common people would work for ME, pay me their taxes and be grateful that I let them have a shack to live in! Now I've glimpsed the ages to come, and I see people SPENDING MONEY and wearing COLOURFUL CLOTHES and VOTING FOR LEADERS? Well, I won't have it.//
//And so I won't allow Time to start again. No more will history CHANGE the world we live in. Instead, I'm protecting my investment: my glorious medieval realm will last forever, with my friends and I enjoying our life as lords, and the common people underfoot where they belong. You'll all look properly neat and tidy and picturesque when my friends come to visit the beautiful green fields, where these houses WILL NEVER STAND.//
//Enjoy your eternity!//

"Ah, the treasure hunter", he drawls. "I got wind of what you're up to, and thought I should pay you a visit. No false moves, now, or your blacksmith friend feels the edge of my blade.
I must say I'm disappointed that you don't share my vision for the Wheel of Time. An eternal medieval idyll would really be splendid, and you'd all be happy in your place, I'm sure. But, you know, if you insist on complaining, perhaps we could make a deal.
As I said in my letter, what I REALLY want is to protect my investment. I've got very used to being wealthy, and as long as I don't have to give THAT up, I'm sure we could compromise. How about I tell you where the Time Crank is, and you pay me some money so that I can carry on being rich?"

You leave the church and are on Hangleton Way. You are aiming to turn right onto Hardwick Road, but soon, the buildings and tarmac fade away like mist. It has become an old trackway across the Downs. Either side of the chalk path you see skylarks ascending over fields farmed by Romans. It is 70 AD.
Then in the distance you see a large stone villa and smaller farm buildings. You wonder who lives there and why?
Further along the way you meet a man. You ask if he is a Roman, "No" he says. "My family was around here before them and farmed these hills too. Funny bunch, some say it's retired Roman soldiers who live up there. And look here!" The man shows you five Roman coins. "They trade with these coins", he says. "Different from ours, aren't they? I don't think they'll last long".
"I tell you what", he adds, and points to the face on one of the coins. "If you can tell me who that is, I'll let you have them".

"FORE!" You quickly jump out of the way as a golf ball whizzes past. You are north of the church, on the West Hove Golf Course. Mr Nicholas, the head groundsman of the golf course, runs up and breathlessly apologises for nearly hitting you with the golf ball.
He is then quick to point out that just over the hill was the bunker where they found an Anglo-Saxon burial.
You press on, but as you pass over the hill, the neat, clipped golf course dissolves, and you find yourself on tousled sheep-cropped turf. This is the kingdom of the Suth Seax, the South Saxons: Sussex, as it's known today. It is 600 AD. In the distance, where the 14th hole of the golf course is today, stands a Saxon warrior with a large polished shield and spear.
"Bide there, wayfarer!" he shouts. "Some madness has come upon this land. I just saw people with metal sticks hitting what looked like eggs around a field!"
You explain that these were just golfers, and tell him about your quest and Time being crunched into itself. His eyes widen, but he laughs ruefully. "Well", he says, "why should we be surprised? The remains of times past are always with us anyway. I mean, look at these".

You leave the church heading east, but before you've even passed the church hall, the collision of time has brought you to an ancient track way, flint stone glinting in the wet mud. It is 1361. The track follows the same course as the modern Hangleton Way, curving off to the northeast. On either side of the path there are a small number of cottages and some larger communal buildings, all made of stone walls and thatch roofs.
To the south, where St Helens Park is now, you can see a man standing next to a stagnant pond. He is leaning on a shovel, and wearing a tunic with a cloak and woollen socks. "Greetings to you, traveller", he says wearily. "You've come at a bad time for Hangleton. Once this was a prosperous village: we reared sheep and grew grain. But in my grandparents' time, we had bad weather and really poor harvests for years. And then the plague came: the Black Death. It near wiped out the whole village; and now it's come back again. I don't know how we'll cope. Those who haven't got sick are thinking of moving away. It wouldn't surprise me if in a few years, the village will vanish".

You are standing in a stone courtyard, with the Roman villa built around it. The building has one storey, with a tiled roof. It does look like a farm. You can see lots of jars and pottery inside the rooms, and there are eleven clay ovens in one of them.
Eight burly men in loose tunics and sandals come to meet you. "Welcome", they call. "Some people who meet us think we are actually native Britons who admire Roman culture. Now, that is actually quite common, and we Romans like it when Britons adopt our style. But actually we are retired Roman soldiers: the eight of us served together in one contubernia, a unit in the Roman army. When we retired, we were given land to settle here, and now we grow malted grain and we can live off selling it".
They ask you if you have just come from "The Old Way", the road on which you were walking: it goes between London and the Roman port on the River Adur. That is where most people who pass by are going. When they hear about your quest, though, they become serious. They're sorry to say they haven't heard of the Time Crank. But they would like to help you, if you can do something for them in return:

As you enter the village, you can see it is in decline. Some of the stone-walled cottages look empty, some have collapsed. In the yards outside, though, you can see sheep, chickens and some pigs, and there is a beehive too. Three children are looking after the animals, but stop their work to come and talk to you.
They tell you their names are Thora, Winifred and Viola. They say how lucky they are that their parents stayed with them. Lots of their friends were abandoned when the plague came. They like going to the pond at the top of St Helen's Green to play. They invite you into their cottage.
Inside it is quite bare but you can see a glass lamp and pottery. There are timber beams and you are in one of three rooms, under a thatched roof. There are six ovens in one of the rooms. A thick stew of onions, leeks and peas bubbles on the stove. The girls tell you that their family bake bread for the village and grow wheat and barley, but things are really hard now.

You begin your journey to Devil's Dyke in modern day Hangleton: just past the row of shops, a sign points you to the Dyke Railway Trail. Then in the distance you hear the hoot of a steam train. The past has collided with the present again! The pathway is now the Victorian railway, running from Hove to Devils Dyke, opened in 1887. You hop on board!
Arriving at the Dyke Railway station, you can see the Victorian fairground ahead, with people enjoying the Merry-go-rounds, bicycle railways, coconut shies and fortune tellers. Britain's first aerial cable car runs across the chasm of the Dyke and provides a view of the breathtaking scenery! But to the right, history has collided AGAIN: amongst the blackthorn and bramble, people from the 21st century dance wildly to pumping electronic music - it's an outdoor rave!

But where is the Devil? Fortunately some of the merrymakers ask where you're going. A straight-backed woman in a crisp blouse and long skirt says, "Well, I once heard a tale that the Evil One dug this dyke in order to let in the sea and flood the churches of Sussex; but they say he was scared away somehow by an old woman from Poynings village". "Oh, no, it wasn't like that", says a grinning girl with dreadlocks and glittery makeup. "I heard that him and his wife are buried here. If you look right down at the bottom of the dyke there, you can see two, like, banks of earth. That's their graves. You could try there".

Suddenly you hear a roaring, groaning voice! "OOOORRRRRAAAAAAWWWWWNNNNaoow, can't a prince of darkness get some peace?!" Erupting through the soil is the Devil: hairy, horned and very angry.
"I'm trying to get some sleep down here", he rants, "and they're up there, night after night, banging and shouting and laughing and singing - makes me turn in my grave, it does!"
He spots you and his eyes narrow craftily. "Oh, it's you, is it? Come to get the Time Crank off me, have you? Well, tough: I'm never letting go of it!" He brandishes a hairy fist, in which you can see the Time Crank itself!
"Now I've got it", the Devil continues, "I can finally do something about all that NOISE! They've been driving me spare, dancing and playing again and again all through history. But I'm not having it any more. De Warenne should have known better than to give the Crank to me! You know what I'm going to do?"
He leans forward and grins. "I might not have finished digging my dyke to the sea, but now, with the Time Crank, I can bring the sea to here! I'll turn back time to the Cretaceous Period! Dinosaur times! And in dinosaur times, ALL OF SUSSEX was UNDERWATER!"
He laughs madly. "It's true! It was under the sea, sleeping dreamily while enormous reptiles swam above. That's where the chalk in your hills came from: it's the shells of little sea creatures that built up over millions of years. And when I plunge Sussex back underwater, I'll never have to bother about the noisy visitors ever again!"

Otherwise, thankyou for coming! [[Your adventure ends here.->Credits]] "Well too bad!" shouts the Devil. "Here comes the flood!" With one jump, he leaps over the horizon. You see a flash of light, and then you hear a rushing of waves! Before your eyes, a wall of water rises over the Downs, poised to crash down on all you can see. Vast, scaly forms swim back and forth baring sharp teeth. The sea looms above you...
But that's not how it has to end!
(text-colour:#fab005)[The Devil has only turned Time BACKWARDS. And all the history that was jumbled up on top of each other is now toppling backwards, into times that came before. If you wish, you can hop back in time with it to the start of your adventure, and try again!]
If you wish to [[PLAY AGAIN->Introduction]], good luck! If not, thank you for trying, and best wishes. [[Your adventure ends here.->Credits]]You leave the sights and sounds of the fairground and partygoers behind you, and ride the train peacefully back to Hangleton. As you step into the church, Abel Cooms is waiting eagerly. "Well, come on, have you got it?!" he jitters - and then he sees the Time Crank in your hand.
"Ahhh, my word, young'un" he breathes, taking it from you. "You've done yourself proud, and no mistake".
Calmly, solemnly, he fits the Time Crank back into its place at St Helen's Church, the oldest building in Hangleton, the Axle of History. Then he turns and gives you a piercing look. "You've done a great thing today", he says. "It's because of you that Time can start turning again, and we can all get on with our lives. Everyone in history will be grateful to you for that. But remember: you've been wandering through lots of different points in the past. And you've made choices in each of them, and promises maybe. History itself won't necessarily be the same this time round. You might have changed it, for the better or the worse.
"But anyway", he says, looking back to the Time Crank. "We'll soon see what's in store". He spits on his hands and grips the crank firmly. "Now, you watch this", he says - and heaves the crank downward.
You hear a rumble like an earthquake and a rush like a summer breeze, and you feel as if all the world was whirling like a roundabout. Lights dance in the air about you, white and gold, and you hear voices, laughter, tears and song spinning off to all their places in History. You know that the Wheel of Time is turning again. Your adventure is over. You set off home, to start your life in this new reality:

Christianity and Islam became joint state religions of the Empire, alongside the worship of Jupiter, Juno and the other Roman deities. It's spring in the VERY NEAR future, in the sleepy suburb of Hangleton to the north of Brighton & Hove. And as we all know, we've been through a difficult time recently: the pandemic has brought a lot of worry and bad news, and brought normal life to a halt. We're hoping that things will start getting going again soon - seeing friends, visiting places, life reawakening around us? But instead, it seems that something very unusual has occurred!
Strange sightings have been reported all around Hangleton. People have been spotted in odd, old-fashioned clothes with antiquated accents - Roman soldiers marching up Hangleton Way, Victorian daytrippers at the newsagents, medieval lords on St Helen's Park. Some say the buildings have melted away before their eyes, leaving a glimpse of wide open fields or deep woods. Some even say they've heard the rush of the sea right outside their door, or the roar of ancient monsters at night.
(text-colour:#fab005)[YOUR task, if you choose to accept it, is to get to the bottom of this mystery! YOU must find out what's causing these bizarre events. YOU must stop them from getting worse. The good people of Hangleton are counting on YOU!]

"Ah, you want to strike a deal, do you?" smirks the Devil slyly. "You should know there's a saying about making a deal with me... But yes, if you insist. I will only give you the Time Crank if you PROMISE to erase all those noisy tourists and partygoers from history!"
