FAQ Providing References

Note: From December 2010 I leave the employment of the University of Sussex. I can still provide references for former students, though an instant response is not always guaranteed!

Will I write a reference for you?

If you are a former student of mine, then yes I will write a reference for you if you provide me the relevant information.

What I need
I need all this information in a single email, or other single document: previous experience has shown that when I have to struggle to collate information from different sources, this is likely to lead to delays ...
  1. Your full name, year(s) of study at Sussex, preferably your registration number.
  2. Course(s) taken, where possible grade(s) received.
  3. To whom [full details] is the reference to be addressed.
  4. How is it to be sent -- email, web access, snail mail, combination of these?
  5. Is it to be sent now, or should I wait to receive a request from them?
  6. What is the deadline for them to receive it?
  7. Is there online information, eg job advertisement, where I can see what they are asking for?
  8. What further background information can you give me that is relevant?
